Preparing Your Family for Your Surrender to Federal Prison

Designation and Pre-Surrender Concerns and Questions

In this week’s video I want to discuss two issues that two new clients contacted me about over the past week.

The first involves a physician who went to trial and was found guilty. His wife retained us to assist with his designation concerns as they recently relocated to Florida as well as which facility would be the best for he and his family given the programs he is likely eligible for including RDAP. After working with their attorney, they now understand what needs to be done prior to and at their sentencing in two weeks. We will then begin our post-sentencing work together.

What is “Inmate.Com”

Not an official term, “Inmate.Com” is still one of the most common – and important – terms when discussing the federal prison system. It is a slang term which refers to the informal communication network among inmates within a prison or across the wider prison system.

Put another way, it is the “grapevine” or rumor mill that inmates use, to pass along information, news, gossip, and unfortunately, sometimes misinformation, verbally from one inmate to another.

How Does the Commissary Work in Federal Prison

Within federal prisons, commissaries provide inmates with a much-needed taste of the outside world, selling a variety of items that are not provided by the prison, but are incredibly helpful in maintaining some semblance of comfort and convenience.

Knowing how the commissary system works can greatly improve an inmate’s time behind bars, but like almost everything related to the Bureau of Prisons, it is not an easy system to navigate.

The Importance of Your Support System While In Federal Prison

One of the most stressful parts of preparing to surrender to Federal Prison is leaving our families and loved ones behind.

As I tell everyone, both clients and their families, being in a prison camp is the easy part. The hard part is what our families and loved ones have to face while we are away.

The inmate is fed 3 meals a day, given a safe place to sleep and has little to actually worry about on a daily basis other than being productive, programming and staying clear of any trouble.
