Understanding Security Levels
The BOP classifies facilities by security level. Your designation depends on multiple factors.
Minimum (Camp)
Lowest security. Often dormitory housing, limited perimeter security, and more freedom of movement.
Low Security (FCI)
Double-fenced perimeter, dormitory or shared housing, work and program opportunities.
Medium Security (FCI)
Strengthened perimeter, cell housing, more limited movement within facility.
High Security (USP)
Maximum security with multiple perimeters, controlled movement, and strict protocols.
Why Designation Matters
Your facility designation affects every aspect of your incarceration. Being placed in a facility near family makes visitation possible. Being in a facility with the right programs can help you reduce your sentence and prepare for release.
While you cannot choose your exact facility, understanding the process and presenting your case correctly can influence the outcome. The BOP considers legitimate requests when making designation decisions.
We've helped hundreds of clients navigate this process successfully, understanding what the BOP considers and how to present the strongest possible case for your preferred placement.
