Parenting From Federal Prison
Parenting while one parent is in federal prison can be a challenging and emotional experience, both for incarcerated individuals and their children, but it is also one of the most important things to consider. I know this from personal experience, as my two children...
Preparing Your Family for Your Surrender to Federal Prison
In this video, the speaker recounts receiving a call from a lady whose husband was about to surrender to federal prison. He discusses misconceptions about his own prison preparation and emphasizes the importance of honesty, patience, and preparation for families facing similar situations. He highlights his own experience of reducing a 60-month sentence to 21 months and offers guidance on navigating the complexities of the prison system, including programs like RDAP and the First Step Act.
Orange Is NOT The New Black In Federal Prison Camps
Nearly every client and their families are concerned with the safety of prison. While this is an understandable concern, I compare federal prison camps to NFL football games. If you take someone’s seat, throw food or drinks on them, or become too unruly and aggressive towards the other fans, incidents will occur.
Designation and Pre-Surrender Concerns and Questions
In this week’s video I want to discuss two issues that two new clients contacted me about over the past week.
The first involves a physician who went to trial and was found guilty. His wife retained us to assist with his designation concerns as they recently relocated to Florida as well as which facility would be the best for he and his family given the programs he is likely eligible for including RDAP. After working with their attorney, they now understand what needs to be done prior to and at their sentencing in two weeks. We will then begin our post-sentencing work together.
What are the Best Jobs in Federal Prison and how do you get them
Working in a federal prison camp can offer various job opportunities with different responsibilities and benefits for inmates. Some of the best jobs are those that provide valuable skills and experiences that can be useful upon release.
What is “Inmate.Com”
Not an official term, “Inmate.Com” is still one of the most common – and important – terms when discussing the federal prison system. It is a slang term which refers to the informal communication network among inmates within a prison or across the wider prison system.
Put another way, it is the “grapevine” or rumor mill that inmates use, to pass along information, news, gossip, and unfortunately, sometimes misinformation, verbally from one inmate to another.
The Unhealthy State of Prison Medical Care
The quality of medical care in the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has been a subject of concern and criticism over the years and is one of the top worries clients and their families have when they reach out to us.
How Does the Commissary Work in Federal Prison
Within federal prisons, commissaries provide inmates with a much-needed taste of the outside world, selling a variety of items that are not provided by the prison, but are incredibly helpful in maintaining some semblance of comfort and convenience.
Knowing how the commissary system works can greatly improve an inmate’s time behind bars, but like almost everything related to the Bureau of Prisons, it is not an easy system to navigate.
How You Can Choose or Change the Facility that you’ve been Designated
You may not know that it is possible to change or influence your federal prison camp designation before you surrender, but there are multiple steps you can take which may help.
The Importance of Your Support System While In Federal Prison
One of the most stressful parts of preparing to surrender to Federal Prison is leaving our families and loved ones behind.
As I tell everyone, both clients and their families, being in a prison camp is the easy part. The hard part is what our families and loved ones have to face while we are away.
The inmate is fed 3 meals a day, given a safe place to sleep and has little to actually worry about on a daily basis other than being productive, programming and staying clear of any trouble.
How to Work With Your Case Manager & Prepare For the Earliest Possible Release
With the CARES Act scheduled to end in June, the notion of you or your loved one getting out of prison much sooner than what is provided for under the FSA has diminished.
While there remain many viable routes to securing the earliest possible release, your case manager in prison, the person who determines not only your release date, but if you will be going right home to home confinement, or to a halfway house is the ultimate determining factor. This is also the person who you might need if you run afoul of any of the many rules and procedures in the facility.

Sam Mangel
Federal White Collar Advisor
My name is Sam Mangel and I’m pleased to reveal the back story of how I came to work with people going through the federal justice system. After all, I’m asking you to trust me. It’s only fair that I reveal my background so you will have a better idea of who I am and how I got here. My pathway to working with my team began long ago.
On April 12, 2016, at 7:00 am, I heard a knock on the door of my home. I went and opened it to find about eight people. They wore blue windbreakers with large FBI letters stenciled on them.
